Holmessweet Bébé Bistro: Round 1

Well, the six month mark was only a few days away, so we decided it was time to move from rice cereal on to more interesting things!

And that also meant...
drumroll...
time for me to try out my Christmas gift -
the Beaba babycook!!!

(Could you ever imagine a girl could get so excited about a little green appliance?)

(Isn't it cute?)

I've been poring over babyfood cookbooks for the last several months. (Check out my bookshelf on the left sidebar to see the books I've been reading.) I love cookbooks to begin with, but the world of babyfood cookbooks is one I've never before entered, so it's been pretty exciting.

After reading that avocado is an excellent "first food" and also a super brain food, I excitedly bought two organic avocados at Kroger.

I cringed as I paid $2.69 EACH, knowing that my mom gets them on sale in Houston for 4/$1.

You can imagine my displeasure when this is what I saw when I cut open the avocados.

They were BOTH rotten!

By the way, I called Kroger, and they did replace my avocados, but I'm no longer buying organic avocados. After doing a little produce research, I learned that avocados are on the list of fruits and veggies that can safely be bought non-organic. Since then, I've been buying avocados at Sam's in a bag of 5 for about $5... a much better deal! Click here to get a free printable copy of the "Dirty Dozen" and the "Cleaner Dozen" produce that you can take with you to the grocery store.

So after the rotten avocado fiasco, we had a change of plans!

New item on the Holmessweet Bébé Bistro menu:

Butternut squash was originally going to be babyfood adventure #2, so I had one on hand and was able to quickly bump it up in the ranks to adventure #1.

Once the squash was peeled, the diced pieces went into the steamer basket

where they steamed for about 15 minutes.

The babycook automatically shuts off when the food is finished steaming, which is one of the things that I've grown to love most about it. I don't have to stand over it to monitor or check the steaming veggies, so my watchful eye can be on Isaac rather than on pots on the stove.

After steaming, the chunks get poured out of the steaming basket and into the blender bowl along with the steaming water (keeping all the good-for-you nutrients!),

then they're puréed to a babyfood consistency.

The squash came out so silky smooth... I was really surprised.
The babycook honestly exceeded my expectations.

Once the butternut squash was steamed, puréed, and ready,
we got the little boy in the highchair...

and offered the first bite.
There was a little uncertainty about this new flavor,
as the look on his face clearly expresses...

But about three bites later, he was eagerly gulping it down!

As usual, you can see that Christian wanted to be very involved!

After storing the next two day's worth of butternut squash in the fridge, the rest went into ice cube trays and off to the deep freezer.

After the cubes froze, they went into a dated ziplock bag.
(This picture is sweet potatoes though!)

Babyfood-making isn't nearly as intimidating as I thought it would be. We use the jarred food when we're going out, and it's really convenient. But at home, we're really enjoying this homemade babyfood that lets us expose Isaac to such a wide variety of foods!

SO proud that you are feeding our grandson so healthily! The pictures and text are awesome. Pioneer Woman would be proud!
